Came in today...

The Birds / Psycho / Czech / 1970

Damn, Eddie's Predator is a tough act to follow, but Chris does so with class.
Beautiful double-bill man, one that's been on my list for years.
Congratulations.
 cheers

Right before I logged on and saw Eddie's Predator and Chris' Hitchcock, I heard a knock at the door.
It was the post and they had a tube for me.
You might remember this being posted for sale here by APF member Phil (OcularBeing).
Well, now it is mine.
Thank you Phil for the safe packaging and rapid delivery!

Nice, Ted. And as always, I love the fact that it is created artwork and not cobbled photo images.

Do you know who the artist is?

Hi all,

Earlier this year I commissioned (through a mutual friend) Tongdee to reimagine me a poster for one of my favourite films, Predator (1987). The original film was released in Thailand at a time when the use of painted artwork was being phased out and the original Thai poster is a photographic design that was based on the US one sheet.

Because the original photographic poster was comparatively disappointing, I was excited to see what Tongdee would create. I gave him free reign with the exception of a couple of things I was keen to see (the iconic thermal-vision being one) and after a few weeks was sent a sketch with his idea for the layout. After requesting a couple of very minor tweaks I gave the go ahead and Tongdee began working on the actual painting. Last week I received the finished article and I’m very happy with the result. I love the layout and the use of colours, including the incorporation of the thermal-vision Predator hand. I also love the artistic licence he took on a few elements which was typical of his paintings from the original period of him working on film posters. If you're a fan of the film you'll spot these tweaks quickly.

The poster is just over American one sheet size and I plan to get it framed as soon as possible. If you visit my site I’ve tried to take as many pictures as possible so you can see the details, and you’ll be able to see the grain from the canvas onto which Tongdee painted. Also check out the pictures of the artist in his studio.

Check out my site for more details: https://www.filmonpaper.com/posters/predator-original-artwork-thailand/

Ed, does Tongdee normally do private commissions? You mentioned a mutual friend aided in the process. Was this done as more a special request/one off?

Again, all I can say is congrats for it all pulling together. He did a spectacular job and the fact that it is a US OS size canvas makes it even more captivating!  faint2.gif

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Monster_A_GoGo: I'm just waiting for a response from the mutual friend to see if he's happy that I publicly talk figures. I'm happy to PM you though.

Jeff: I only found out earlier this year that Tongdee is even still painting - I had assumed he's been retired for a while since he's 70 next year. My understanding is that he's still doing work for various non-film clients but not at the same pace as in his heyday. I believe he then fits in commissions when he can but I don't think he's done too many. I'm aware of one other that was based on The Man with the Golden Gun.

I can't wait to get that puppy framed!  :D

Chris: I've always wanted to find one of those Hitchcock posters. Is it the A1 format?

Ted: Sweet Moreau. I've not seen that one before. Gotta love Thai posters ;)

The reason I asked price was because, like Jeff, i was wondering if it were possible to also commission something. Your painting is simply gorgeous. WOW!!!

Unsure.
There's a sig lower left but it beats the snot outta me who it is.
Maybe one of our resident Thai experts recognizes it?
I'll PM Phil.

Thanks Jeff, Ted, & Ed!

I too had been on the lookout for one of these in good condition for a while... this one landed in my lap and I couldn't say no. I've been on a Psycho kick here lately, it's one of my favorites, so you'll see some more coming across the screen here shortly.

Ed: Beautiful poster man. Congrats on getting that lined up. Where you nervous at all giving him free reign on the design? I'm such a control freak when it comes to things like that, that I would've been sweating bullets. Whichever way.. he did a bang up job for sure! The double bill is the A3 size. He had an A1, but was asking much more than what I priced them at through researching prices they've gone for over the past 5 years or so, so I held off. I'd like to eventually pick one of those up as well though when the time is right.

I trusted that he'd come up with a nice composition and was thrilled when he sent through the first sketch (see below). I asked for the laser to be made red as that would have bugged me but I didn't want to prevent his artistic licence too much, hence not asking for the laser to be coming out of the gun on the Predator's shoulder etc.

Cool on the Hitchcock and I understand; those A1s can be really pricey in comparison. I'll bite one day too though.

What a nice commission work !!  Beautiful stuff !

You finally manage to have Tongdee, well done ! So did you get a name behind the commercial Apocalypse 1 sheet ?  I wonder how many were printed ?  Pe* and Sant* went silent  when I asked again about the "Dr No" and "Apocalypse Now", Sant* told me he is only selling original (sure commercial original :) ) and blamed the other seller for doing fake printing.

Predator painting is gorgeous, congrats Eddie! Love the colours and composition, the infra-red hand is perfectly placed. I wish I had the talent to take some paint and canvas and create something like this.

A B2 for the Japanese film, Ninjutsu Sarutobi Sasuke (1976) (English title: Ninja Spy)

I've never seen the movie but the art grabbed my eye as it reminds me, in many ways, of a classic, Japanese woodblock print.

And the character of Sarutobi Sasuke looks to be well known in Japanese ninja-based literature:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarutobi_Sasuke

This was actually a later Aug arrival, but other family issues took a front seat, hence the delay. But better late than never.

And a "thank you" out to T for help with this one as well as the awesome photo.

Ladeda: Thanks! I really hope I can get to meet him one day. Apparently his studio is full of amazing stuff.

TheBigBoss: Glad you like it. Not sure on the AN reprints but I can tell you that I really trust Pea and am as certain as I can be she's never reprinted anything.

Tob: Cheers. I too can't imagine being able to paint to that level. What a talent!

Cool poster!

The initial 3 that came out just didn't do it for me, but then I saw the IMAX Bus and was sad I hadn't seen it as a One Sheet.  But today I found it on the Bay from the same person I bought the rare IMAX Jurassic World one sheet from.  So Yey!

The movie could be a stinker but it's the poster art that we are talking about here.  ;)

I missed a couple on here. Klownicle, I LOVE the colorful SUICIDE SQUAD poster. I want a bowl! Ha! (Did they make SUICIDE SQUAD cereal? Looks like it would be a natural best seller!) And JEFF, what a fun little Japanese ninja poster that is. Nifty!

There are just hours left in September and instead of hogging the 1st October spot again, I thought I'd post my usual sampling of my October 1st post here at the end of September.

Here they are--just three. Not the best and not the worst of my new post:

THE RAINS OF RANCHIPUR:

This was an OOPS purchase---but i still like the look of it.

HERCULES IN NEW YORK:

Yes, before he was Conan, Schwarzenegger was also Hercules.

BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD:

Cool horror sleaze from the 70s.
