"Phone Booth" Size (26x50)
« on: May 13, 2016, 10:13:10 PM »
What is the background to this size poster, measuring approx 26 x50 inches? A curious name, too, as phone booths arent really around anymore. Is this a new(er) size? And when was it introduced?

Here's an EMP link showing a number of them for different movies they were made for. They all look to be advances:

I cant even recall the last time I saw one here in LA. More commonly, now, so it seems, pay phones are mounted on walls (like on banks or drug stores, in shopping centers etc) in groups of 2 or 3, side by side.

And because that poster is a US piece, I thought maybe the name was derived for some other reason.

From this Nov, 2014 LA Times article: http://touch.latimes.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-82065614/

"Eventually, the glass booths disappeared, leaving stunted kiosks in their place. But by that time, the phone booth's status as an American icon had been cemented, namely for its starring role in the Clark-Kent-to-Superman transition.

There used to be more than 2 million pay phones in the United States, according to the American Public Communications Council, a trade association. Fewer than 500,000 are left. Of California's 27,000 pay phones, most are concentrated in Los Angeles County, the San Francisco Bay Area and along the Interstate 5 corridor, according to the Public Utilities Commission."

And this is talking about the decline of pay phones in general, not just classic phone booths, whose numbers are even smaller.

Even when phone booths were around in much higher numbers, I don't think I ever remember seeing a movie poster being displayed on any of the 3 glass sides (the fourth being the folding door) when I was growing up.

Don't forget to show us the fresh gum in the receiver and the smell of piss on the floor.  Yeah, I really miss phone booths and their glamour.

I'd like to know how the definition of "phone booth" came about on these posters
or is it another self-created definition

makes a big difference

well as resident phone booth expert, I've never seen a poster in one, and as said above, not sure where it could possibly go.

I have photographed booths in:

Thailand,
England,
Scotland,
Ireland,
Canada,
USA,
Caribbean,
Dubai,
 and of course Australia.

The photos sound cool, Ari. Look forward to seeing some, too!  :D

So where, then, did the term/name, "phone booth" style come from for these size posters?  dontknow.gif

Only Ari can explain his 'noble cause and reasoning' for photographing the wondrous phone booth.  8)

I reckon a phone booth in Ari's distant past has sentimental value for some reason.

Exactly, I tried to choose my words carefully in case Ari didn't have his first sexual experience in a phone booth

I saw some really interesting ones in Thailand and started noticing them wherever I travelled, and took pics,
I reckon they are more common than you think, but you just don't notice them, once I started taking photos of them i see them everywhere.

Actually Steve, you might recall when I was in that boarding house and my phone service was a mess, and you let me borrow your phone, the day earlier I spent hours in a phone booth nearby just off King Street trying to get my mobile reconnected.
no sex. but swearing, lots of swearing.
