Gel-backing?????
« on: March 17, 2016, 01:21:29 PM »
Awhile back, i got this poster for an old Boris Karloff/Peter Lorre flick called "THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU". It's a cool poster, but it's a little rough and in need of some TLC.

Not long after i got it, Jeff asked me if I was going to restore it. I do NOT like linen backing and told him so. He suggested (I think it's called) gel backing. Now that I'm finally thinking about doing something for the poster...I can't seem to find anything in this section (I may be blind and just not have seen it?) on gel backing. Does anyone know anything about it and/or reliable / good restorers who do it?  What kind of time issue and costs are involved?

THANKS!!!!!

I would not get a one sheet gel-backed. Gel backing is a process that is better for heavier posters like inserts and half sheets

go linen, if you plan on doing anything, although I have no idea why you would. That poster would look just fine in a frame, as is.

If this were mine, I agree with Rich and would leave it as is, too, Shawn. It looks to be in great shape and the few little nicks and bumps show it's age. It would look spectacular, framed in its current state. And BTW, what a freakin' cool poster, too!  sm1

get some acid free archival repair tape and secure/reinforce the back side where there are tears on the folds might be a better ( and cheaper) solution than backing.
just a thought.
Nice poster.

Great idea, ARI. Thanks!  (Where do I find that kind of tape? Call me clueless...)

RICH and JEFF--I think you are right. I'll just frame it soon. THANK YOU!

I get from art supply store, I assume you could do likewise or probably online.

note, a little goes a long way, its especially handy at the cross folds, where it becomes fragile.

Thank you ARI, JAY, and JEFF!  I'll get on it, get some tape and frame it. I'll post a photo once it's done.

Thank you so much.
